RESH-Liberia Welcomes Sonya Akhgar


The Renewed Energy Serving Humanity – RESH Liberia Family joyously welcomes on board her newest international volunteer consultant Sonya Akhgar.

Sonya is a master’s of international development candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, with a concentration in governance and international public management. Sonya was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to the United States when she was three years old. She grew up in Claremont, California, and received her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Irvine, with an emphasis in comparative politics.

A driven, compassionate, and hard worker, she comes from an extended background of serving the needs of her constitutes through congressional and state internships in her native California. She was actively involved with Ignite, a non-profit organization geared towards women, that teaches young girls and women the skills to run for public office during her college years. While she was enhancing young women to collect the tools needed for empowerment and leadership, she also served as an intern for the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, where she assisted the Consul General with multi-various duties, and aided the rest of the staff to run a smooth task force.

Sonya speaks English and Dari fluently and has passion to visit and experience the rich cultural heritage of Liberia in the future.
